STRAWBERRY FIELDS AND CYAN WATERS

The morning was bustling with unpacking bags and the smell of just-ground coffee. “The sooner you get up, the sooner we can get you home, you know!” Amber scrunched her eyes at the pouring sunlight and turned to where the sound was coming from. She couldn’t remember much after they sunk into the mattress, just the crickets and rustling blankets.

“Theodore, how long have you been up?” If the coffee hadn’t woken her up, the lemony scent coming off of the God’s Chosen definitely did.

“Much longer than you can imagine.” He grunted, trying to pull the duvet from Bella’s claws. “Help me wake those two up, and then get ready yourself. We’ll start after breakfast?”

“Definitely. I am not eating on the road.” She pushed herself off the ground while pulling the blanket, successfully throwing it off.

“Hey, don't just throw things!” Leo had just stepped out of the house when a 3-inch platinum plaque flew above his head. “Yuva.” He read the engraving and traced the patterned hexagon on the back. “Why’re you throwing ranks around like that?”

“Quite literally.” Bella tossed up the one that read Iesis: Commander General and dropped it in a pocket. “Iesis and Yuva are the two highest political ranks. Why are you just tossing them around?”

“We never know when we might need them. The rest of the world might not operate on these, but we’re stepping into ancient territory. Who knows when social status might matter.” His words were like a reminder to himself. No one else knew, but Theodore hadn’t ventured out into the world in a very long time as well, and honestly, he was just as clueless about modern civilization as they were.

“Fair enough. Do we need anything else, or more specifically, do you need anything else?” They were in the place Theodore spent his childhood in, so no doubt memories would be resurfacing.

“I’m good actually.” He gave the wall a quick pat. “I’m glad to see this place is still standing.” He just stopped talking, like he had forgotten what he had to say. “Bella, you should exchange titles with Bee.” He snapped his fingers in clarity. “I was—fortunately—related to only one house of rank Iesis, so the Head Minister’s broach is not something I can access now. Anyway, the Welkins are far too back in time to have the power of a rank Iesis. Even if you did, Amber’s power merged about three generations ago. Nobody would believe her to be a rank Iesis, forget Yuva. If only we could...” Bella had already exchanged with Amber the minute he asked her to, not understanding why such a long explanation was needed.

“Anyone forgotten anything? Last call!”

“Psh, you sound like my tutor.” Leo shuddered, the reaction not completely fake. “The Tyyneys Labyrinth right? Let’s get to the cornerstone!” Without waiting for a response, Leo made a face at him before running out the boundary. “Woohoo! We’re going home!”

“What’s wrong?” Bella caught a glimpse of Amber’s complicated expression.

“Nothing’s wrong.” Amber relaxed her face.
